ZYRTEC (cetirizine hydrochloride) is a prescription drug given to patients for the relief of seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis (indoor and outdoor allergy symptoms), including treatment of chronic urticaria (itching due to chronic hives). Such symptoms include:

• Sneezing.
• Rhinorrhea.
• Nasal pruritus.
• Ocular pruritus.
• Tearing and redness of the eyes.
• Postnatal discharge.

ZYRTEC works by blocking histamine, a chemical released by certain cells in the body, which causes these allergic symptoms.

Contraindications:

Exercise caution when taking ZYRTEC if you have consumed alcohol, if you are driving a vehicle, or operating potentially dangerous machinery.

Do not start ZYRTEC allergy medication without first talking to your doctor if you have any of the following conditions:

• Pregnant.
• Breastfeeding.
• Kidney disease.
• Liver disease.

The existence of these conditions may require your doctor to prohibit, make a dosage adjustment or call for special monitoring while taking ZYRTEC.

Cetirizine is in the FDA pregnancy category B, which means that it is not expected to harm an unborn baby, or whether it has adverse reactions to nursing infants.

Interactions:

Studies show no significant clinical interactions between ZYRTEC and other medicines such as low-dose theophylline, azithromycin, pseudoephedrine, ketoconazole, or erythromycin.

Side effects:

Reported side effects due to use of ZYRTEC were mostly mild or moderate. The most common side effect reported was somnolence. Other adverse reaction included fatigue and dry mouth. Headache and nausea occurred in a small percentage of users.

Patients over 65 years of age are more likely to experience side effects from use of ZYRTEC because of contraindications to existing conditions. Consult your doctor before taking ZYRTEC.
