Singulair (montelukast sodium) is a prescription drug used for the long-term management of asthma, and the treatment of allergic rhinitis. Singulair works by blocking leukotrienes, the substances in the body that causes the inflammation and constriction of airway muscles, and the accumulation of fluid in the lungs when asthma occurs.

SINGULAIR is not classified as a steroid.

SINGULAIR IS NOT FOR THE IMMEDIATE RELIEF OF AN ASTHMA ATTACK.

SINGULAIR can be used by asthma patients age 12 months and older. Studies have shown that SINGULAIR does not affect the growth rate of children.

Contraindications:

Do not take Singulair without informing your doctor of your sensitivity to its formulation. SINGULAIR contains the active ingredient montelukast sodium. Do not take Singulair without first talking to your doctor if you have any of the following conditions:

  • Pregnant.
  • Breastfeeding.
  • Liver disease.
  • Phenylketonuria (PKU).

The existence of these conditions may require your doctor to prohibit, make a dosage adjustment or call for special monitoring while taking Singulair.

Singulair is in the FDA pregnancy category B, which means that it is not expected to harm an unborn baby, or whether it has adverse reactions to nursing infants.

Interactions:

Do not take Singulair (montelukast sodium) without first talking to your doctor if you are taking other prescription or over-the-counter medicines; including vitamins, minerals, and herbal supplements.

Avoid taking aspirin and other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs while taking SINGULAIR.

Side effects:

The most common side effects to taking SINGULAIR include:

  • Stomach pain, stomach or intestinal upset.
  • Heartburn.
  • Tiredness.
  • Fever.
  • Stuffy nose.
  • Cough.
  • Flu.
  • Upper respiratory infection.
  • Dizziness or headache.
  • Rash.

Immediately inform your doctor if you experience a feeling of pins and needles or numbness of arms or legs, flu-like illness, rash or severe inflammation (pain and swelling) of the sinuses (sinusitis).

If you develop allergic-type reactions, stop taking Singulair and seek immediate medical attention.

Side effects other than those identified here may also occur. Talk to your doctor about any side effect that seems unusual or bothersome.

Dosage:

DO NOT TAKE SINGULAIR FOR THE IMMEDIATE RELIEF OF AN ASTHMA ATTACK.

Take Singulair exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Frequency and dosage varies with type of condition. for asthma medication, take Singulair tablet (or granules) once a day in the evening, with or without food. Take it for as long as required by your doctor, even if you no longer experience symptoms of asthma.

SINGULAR granules can be given either directly in the mouth, dissolved in one teaspoonful of formula or breast milk, or mixed with a spoonful of soft food like applesauce, mashed carrots, rice, or ice cream kept at room temperature. Open the packet only when ready to use. Use only within 15 minutes after opening.

Storage:

Store SINGULAIR at 25°C (77°F) and protect from moisture and light.
