Serevent diskus is a prescription medication that is used to prevent asthma attacks, however, it will not treat an asthma attack that has already begun. Salmeterol inhalation is also used to treat chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) including emphysema and chronic bronchitis.

Salmeterol is a bronchodilator, which is used to relax the airway muscles to improve breathing.

Interactions:

Consult with your physician BEFORE taking Serevent if you are taking the following medicines:

•   diuretics (water pills);
•  a beta-blocker such as atenolol (Tenormin), metoprolol (Lopressor), propranolol (Inderal), acebutolol (Sectral), bisoprolol (Zebeta), carteolol (Cartrol), carvedilol (Coreg), labetalol (Normodyne, Trandate), nadolol (Corgard), or pindolol (Visken);
•  antidepressants such as amitriptyline (Elavil), nortriptyline (Pamelor), desipramine (Norpramin), or imipramine (Tofranil);
•  an MAO inhibitor such as isocarboxazid (Marplan), tranylcypromine (Parnate), phenelzine (Nardil), or selegiline (Eldepryl, Emsam);
•  caffeine, a diet medicine, or a decongestant; or
•  aminophylline (Truphylline), theophylline (Slo-Bid, Theobid, TheoDur), and others.

Do not use Serevent diskus without first talking to your doctor if you are taking other prescription or over-the-counter medicines; including vitamins, minerals, and herbal supplements.

Contraindications:

Consult with your physician before taking Serevent to determine if you have a sensitivity to its formulation, which consists of:

(active) salmeterol xinafoate, (inactive) lactose.

Consult with your physician BEFORE taking Serevent diskus if you have any of the following medical conditions:

•   if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding
•  if you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement
•  if you have allergies to medicines, foods, or other substances
•  if you have had a severe allergic reaction to milk protein
•  if you have a history of liver problems, diabetes, heart problems (eg, fast or irregular heartbeat, heart blood vessel problems), high blood pressure, low blood potassium levels, seizures, an adrenal gland tumor (pheochromocytoma), or an overactive thyroid
•  if you have recently been to an emergency room for asthma, have a history of frequent hospitalizations for asthma, or have ever had a life-threatening asthma attack
•  if you have had an unusual reaction to a sympathomimetic medicine (eg, albuterol, pseudoephedrine), such as fast or irregular heartbeat, overexcitement, or severe trouble sleeping
•  if you are taking a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) (eg, phenelzine) or a tricyclic antidepressant (eg, amitriptyline) or you have taken any of these medicines within the last 14 days

If you have any of these conditions, your physician may either require a dosage adjustment, special monitoring during treatment, or prohibit you from taking Serevent altogether.

Serevent diskus is classified as FDA pregnancy category C, which means that it is not known whether it will be harmful to an unborn baby, or whether it can be passed on to nursing infants.

Side effects:

Treatment with Serevent Diskus have reportedly resulted in common and less serious side effects, including: headaches; nasal or sinus congestion; nervousness; stuffy nose; throat irritation; tremor.

Seek immediate medical attention if any of these SEVERE side effects occur while taking Serevent Diskus:

Severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, tongue, or throat; unusual hoarseness); chest pain; choking; fast or irregular heartbeat; fever; new or worsening asthma symptoms (eg, increased chest tightness, coughing, shortness of breath, or wheezing); overexcitement; severe or persistent headache or dizziness; severe or persistent muscle pain or cramps.

Side effects other than those listed here may also occur. Inform your physician about any side effect that seems unusual or bothersome.

Dosage:

Take this medication only as prescribed for you by your physician. Do not deviate from the recommended dosage or the treatment duration as prescribed by your physician.

Do not use salmeterol inhalation to treat an asthma attack that has already begun. It will not work fast enough to reverse your symptoms. Use another, faster-acting inhalation medication to treat an asthma attack.

If you are using salmeterol inhalation to prevent exercise-induced asthma, use the medicine 30 minutes before exercising, or as prescribed your physician. Wait for at least 12 hours to pass before using the medication again.

This medication comes with patient instructions for safe and effective use. Follow these instructions carefully and ask you physician, nurse, or pharmacist about any questions you may have about the medication or treatment with the medication. Do not stop using salmeterol inhalation without first consulting with your physician, as your asthma symptoms may get worse after you stop using the medication

Missed dose:

If you miss a dosage of the medication, use it as soon as you remember, then wait 12 hours before using the medication again. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and wait until your next regularly scheduled dose. Do not use more medication to make up for the missed dose.

Overdose:

Seek immediate medical attention if you think you have used too much of this medication.

Storage:

Store Serevent Diskus at room temperature, between 68 and 77 degrees F (20 and 25 degrees C) and away from heat, moisture, and light. Keep Serevent diskus out of the reach of children and away from pets.
