Memantine is a prescription medication used in the treatment of moderate to severe Alzheimer-type dementia. Memantine works by inhibiting the excess activity of glutamates, substances found in the brain. This inhibition of glutamate may reduce the symptoms associated with Alzheimer disease. Contraindications:

Side effects:

Less serious side effects may also be experienced when taking Memantine, including:

• nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, loss of appetite;
• dizziness, tired feeling;
• weight loss;
• swelling in your hands or feet;
• fast heart rate;
• easy bruising or bleeding, unusual weakness;
• joint pain;
• anxiety, aggression;
• skin rash;
• redness or swelling of or around your eyes;
  
• urinating more than usual.
