LIPITOR (atorvastatin calcium) is a prescription drug given to patients with multiple risk factors for heart disease, or in patients with type 2 diabetes and at least one other risk factor for heart disease, to reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke. These factors include family history, high blood pressure, age, low HDL (good cholesterol) or smoking.

LIPITOR lowers cholesterol by blocking its production in the body. It decreases LDL (bad cholesterol) at an average of 39-60%, triglycerides at 19-37%, and raises HDL (good cholesterol) up to 9%. LIPITOR reduces the risk of hardening of the arteries, which can lead to heart attacks, stroke, and peripheral vascular disease.

Contraindications:

Do not take LIPITOR if you have any of the following conditions:

• Pregnant or may become pregnant.
• Breastfeeding.
• Liver problems.

Do not take LIPITOR without first talking to your doctor if you have any of the following conditions:

• Muscle ache or weakness.
• Drink more than 2 glasses of alcohol daily.
• Diabetes or kidney problems.
• Thyroid problems.

The existence of these conditions may require your doctor to prohibit, make a dosage adjustment or call for special monitoring while taking LIPITOR.

Atorvastatin is in the FDA pregnancy category X, which means it is known to cause birth defects if taken during pregnancy. It is not known whether atorvastatin is passed on through breastfeeding.

LIPITOR (atorvastatin calcium) is not recommended for pediatric use or for children under 10 years of age.

Interactions:

Do not take LIPITOR without first talking to your doctor if you are taking other prescription or over-the-counter medicines; including vitamins, minerals, and herbal supplements.

LIPITOR may also interact with medications for:

Side effects:

LIPITOR is generally well tolerated by most patients; however, it may still cause side effects that can be potentially serious.

Most common side effects reported include: headache, constipation, diarrhea, gas, upset stomach and stomach pain, rash, and muscle and joint pain. These side effects are usually mild and may go away by itself.

The more serious side effects reported by a small number of people include serious muscle problems (may lead to kidney problems, including kidney failure), and liver problems.

Call your doctor immediately if you feel any of the following symptoms:

• Unexplained muscle weakness or pain, especially if accompanied by fever or when you feel very tired.
• Nausea, vomiting, or stomach pain.
• Passing brown or dark-colored urine.
• Feeling more tired than usual.
• Yellowing of the skin or eyes.

If you develop allergic-type reactions, stop taking LIPITOR and seek immediate medical attention.

Side effects other than those identified here may also occur. Talk to your doctor about any side effect that seems unusual or bothersome.

Dosage:

Take LIPITOR exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Frequency and dosage varies with type of condition. If you miss a dose, take the medicine as soon as you remember, except when it has been more than 12 hours since you missed your last dose. Skip the missed dose and take the next scheduled to prevent double dosage.

Stay on a low-fat diet.

Seek emergency medical attention if you think you have taken too much LIPITOR or may have overdosed.

Storage:

Store LIPITOR between 20-25°C (68-77°F). Keep out of children's reach.
