Avapro is a prescription drug that to treat high blood pressure (hypertension). It is also used to treat kidney problems in people with type 2 diabetes (non-insulin dependent). Irbesartan keeps blood vessels from narrowing, to lower blood pressure and improve blood flow.

Interactions:

Contraindications:

Do not take Avapro without informing your doctor of your sensitivity to its formulation: (active) irbesartan, ( inactive) lactose, microcrystalline cellulose, pregelatinized starch, croscarmellose sodium, poloxamer 188, silicon dioxide, magnesium stearate.
Do not take Avapro without first talking to your doctor if you have any of the following conditions:

• kidney disease (or if you are on dialysis);
• liver disease;
• congestive heart failure; or
• high levels of potassium in your blood (hyperkalemia)
• allergies to medicines, foods, or other substances

The existence of these conditions may require your doctor to prohibit, make a dosage adjustment or call for special monitoring while taking Avapro.

Avapro is in the FDA pregnancy category D. This medication can cause harm to an unborn baby.

Side effects:

Call your doctor at once if you have any of these serious side effects:

• swelling, rapid weight gain;
• chest pain, fast heart rate;
• nausea, stomach pain, low fever, loss of appetite, dark urine, clay-colored stools, jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes);
• painful or difficult urination; or
• urinating more or less than usual, or not at all.

Less serious side effects are more likely to occur, such as:

• diarrhea, heartburn, upset stomach;
• feeling tired, nervous, or anxious;
• fever, chills, sore throat, stuffy nose, flu symptoms;
• dizziness;
• headache;
• joint or muscle pain; or
• dry cough.

Side effects other than those identified here may also occur. Talk to your doctor about any side effect that seems unusual or bothersome.

Dosage

Take Avapro exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Frequency and dosage varies with type of condition. Missed dose

Store Avapro at 77 degrees F (25 degrees C) away from heat, moisture, and light. Keep Avapro out of the reach of children and away from pets.
