Interactions:

  •  some azoles, and other drugs that are highly protein bound,
  •  salicylates- aspirin or another salicylate such as magnesium/choline salicylate (Trilisate), salsalate (Disalcid, others), choline salicylate (Arthropan), magnesium salicylate (Magan), or bismuth subsalicylate (Pepto-Bismol);
  •  sulfonamides - sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim (Bactrim, Septra), sulfisoxazole (Gantrisin), or sulfasalazine (Azulfidine);
  •  chloramphenicol,
  •  probenecid,
  •  coumarins,
  •  monoamine oxidase inhibitors - such as isocarboxazid (Marplan), tranylcypromine (Parnate), or phenelzine (Nardil);
  •  and beta adrenergic blocking agents - propranolol (Inderal), atenolol (Tenormin), acebutolol (Sectral), metoprolol (Lopressor), and others;

If you take Glipizide with other medications that raise blood sugar levels, you may develop hyperglycemia or elevated blood sugar. Medications that induce elevated blood sugar include:

  •   the thiazides and other diuretics - such as hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ, Hydrodiuril), chlorothiazide (Diuril), and others;
  •  corticosteroids - such as prednisone (Deltasone, Orasone, others), methylprednisolone (Medrol, others), prednisolone (Prelone, Pediapred, others), and others;
  •  phenothiazines - chlorpromazine (Thorazine), fluphenazine (Prolixin, Permitil), prochlorperazine (Compazine), promethazine (Phenergan), and others;
  •  thyroid products,
  •  estrogens,
  •  oral contraceptives,
  •  phenytoin (Dilantin);
  •  nicotinic acid,
  •  sympathomimetics,
  •  calcium channel blocking drugs,
  •  isoniazid (Nydrazid)

If you are using any of these drugs, you may be required to have a special test before treatment, have a dosage adjustment of Glipizide, or you may not be able to take Glipizide at all unless specified by a physician.

Contraindications:

Consult with your physician before taking Glipizide to determine if you have a sensitivity to its formulation, which consists of:

(active) - Glipizide, (inactive) - lactose monohydrate, corn starch, pregelatinized starch, microcrystalline cellulose, colloidal silicon dioxide, stearic acid.

Inform your physician or pharmacist before taking Glipizide if any of the following apply to you:

  •   pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding
  •   have type 1 diabetes;
  •   if you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement
  •   if you have allergies to medicines, foods, or other substances
  •   if you have had a severe allergic reaction (eg, a severe rash, hives, breathing difficulties, dizziness) to any other sulfonamide medicine, such as acetazolamide, celecoxib, certain diuretics (eg, hydrochlorothiazide), probenecid, sulfamethoxazole, valdecoxib, or zonisamide
  •   if you have a history of liver, kidney, thyroid, or heart problems
  •   if you have stomach or bowel problems (eg, stomach or bowel narrowing or blockage, stomach paralysis), drink alcohol, or have had poor nutrition
  •   if you have very poor health, a high fever, a severe infection, severe diarrhea, or high blood acid levels, or have had a severe injury
  •   if you have a history of certain hormonal problems (eg, adrenal or pituitary problems, syndrome of inappropriate secretion of antidiuretic hormone [SIADH]), or low blood sodium levels
  •   if you will be having surgery


Alcoholic drinks are prohibited if you are taking Glipizide as these increase the risk of lowered blood sugar.

If you have any of these conditions, you may not be able to use Glipizide, or you may need a dosage adjustment or special tests during treatment.

FDA pregnancy category C. This medication may be harmful to an unborn baby.

Side effects:

Stop taking Glipizide and seek immediate medical attention if you experience:

allergic reaction (difficulty breathing; closing of the throat; swelling of the lips, tongue, or face; or hives).

Most of the common side effects include:

  • dizziness or weakness;
  • headache, blurred vision;
  • mild nausea, vomiting,diarrhea or stomach pain;
  • low blood sugar levels. Low blood sugar may make you anxious, sweaty, weak, dizzy, drowsy, or faint. It may also make your heart beat faster; make your vision change; give you a headache, chills, or tremors; or make you more hungry.
  • increased skin sensitivity to sunlight;

Dosage


Take Glipizide by mouth 30 minutes before a meal as directed by your doctor.
If you are taking 1 dose daily, take Glipizide 30 minutes before breakfast or the first main meal of the day unless your doctor tells you otherwise.
Glipizide works best if it is taken at the same time each day.
Continue to take Glipizide even if you feel well. Do not miss any doses.

If used for a prolonged period, this medication may not work at maximum efficacy. If your blood sugar has been under control and then becomes hard to manage, contact your physician immediately. Do not change the dose of your medicine without consulting with your physician first.

Missed dose

If you miss a dose of Glipizide , take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose. Go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take 2 doses at once.

Overdose


If overdose is suspected contact 1-800-222-1222 (the American Association of Poison Control Centers), your local poison control center (http://www.aapcc.org/findyour.htm), or emergency room immediately.


Storage

Store Glipizide at room temperature, between 68 and 77 degrees F (20 and 25 degrees C). Store away from heat, moisture, and light. Keep Glimepiride out of the reach of children and away from pets.
