Gemfibrozil - may affect blood sugar levels

If you take glimipiride with other medications that raise blood sugar levels, you may develop hyperglycemia or elevated blood sugar. Medications that induce elevated blood sugar include:

  • diuretics (water pills- furosemide, hydrochlorothiazide));
  • steroids (prednisone and others);
  • phenothiazines (Compazine and others);
  • thyroid medicine (Synthroid and others);
  • birth control pills and other hormones;
  • seizure medicines (Dilantin and others);
  • diet pills; and medicines to treat asthma, colds or allergies.
  • Calcium channel blockers (eg, diltiazem),
  • diazoxide,
  • niacin,
  • phenytoin,
  • rifamycins (eg, rifampin),
  • sympathomimetics (eg, albuterol, epinephrine, terbutaline),
  • thyroid supplements (eg, levothyroxine)

If you take glimipiride with other medications that lower blood sugar levels, you may develop hypoglycemia or lowered blood sugar. Medications that induce lowered blood sugar include:

  • nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs);
  • aspirin or other salicylates (including Pepto-Bismol);
  • sulfa drugs (Bactrim and others);
  • a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI);
  • beta-blockers (Tenormin and others);
  • probenecid (Benemid); or
  • a blood thinner (warfarin, Coumadin and others).
  • Angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors (eg, enalapril),
  • azole antifungals (eg, miconazole, ketoconazole),
  • chloramphenicol,
  • clofibrate,
  • fenfluramine insulin,
  • metformin,
  • phenylbutazone,
  • quinolone antibiotics (eg, ciprofloxacin),

If you are using any of these drugs, you may be required to have a special test before treatment, have a dosage adjustment of glimipiride, or you may not be able to take glimipiride at all unless specified by a physician.

Alcoholic drinks are prohibited if you are taking glimipiride as these increase the risk of lowered blood sugar.

Contraindications:

Consult with your physician before taking glimipiride to determine if you have a sensitivity to its formulation, which consists of:

(active ) glimepiride, (inactive) lactose (hydrous), sodium starch glycolate, povidone, microcrystalline cellulose, magnesium stearate, ferric oxide red.

Inform your physician or pharmacist before taking glimipiride if any of the following apply to you:

  • pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding
  • if you have had a severe allergic reaction (eg, a severe rash, hives, breathing difficulties, dizziness) to any other sulfonamide medicine, such as acetazolamide, celecoxib, certain diuretics (eg, hydrochlorothiazide), glipizide, probenecid, sulfamethoxazole, valdecoxib, or zonisamide
  • history of stroke or liver, kidney, thyroid, heart, or blood vessel problems
  • stomach or bowel problems (eg, stomach or bowel blockage, stomach paralysis),
  • drink alcohol, or have had poor nutrition
  • if you have type 1 diabetes
  • very poor health,
  • a high fever,
  • a severe infection,
  • severe diarrhea, or high blood acid levels,
  •  have had a severe injury
  • history of certain hormonal problems (eg, adrenal or pituitary problems, syndrome of inappropriate secretion of antidiuretic hormone [SIADH]), or low blood sodium levels
    surgery

FDA pregnancy category C. This medication may be harmful to an unborn baby.

Side effects:

Stop taking glimipiride and seek immediate medical attention if you experience:

  • signs of congestive heart failure (swelling or rapid weight gain, shortness of breath, chest pain);
  • restlessness, irritability, muscle cramps, nausea, headache, confusion, or seizure (convulsions);
  • Severe allergic reactions - skin rash, itching, redness, or irritation;
  • easy bruising or bleeding, unusual weakness; or
  • nausea, stomach pain, low fever, loss of appetite, dark urine, clay-colored stools, jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes).

Most of the common side effects include:

  • dizziness or weakness;
  • headache, blurred vision;
  • mild nausea, vomiting, or stomach pain;
  • low blood sugar levels. Low blood sugar may make you anxious, sweaty, weak, dizzy, drowsy, or faint. It may also make your heart beat faster; make your vision change; give you a headache, chills, or tremors; or make you more hungry.
  • increased skin sensitivity to sunlight;
  • dark urine

Other unspecified side effects may also occur. Consult with your physician about any side effect that seems unusual or bothersome.

Dosage

Take Glimepiride by mouth with breakfast or the first main meal of the day unless specified by your physician.
Glimepiride works best if it is taken at the same time each day.
Do not miss any doses.

Missed dosage

Storage
