Flexeril (Cyclobenzaprine hydrochloride ) is a prescription drug used to relieve muscle spasms resulting from injuries such as sprains, strains, or pulls. Combined with rest and physical therapy, Flexeril provides relief of muscular stiffness and pain. Although Flexeril relieves the pain of strains and sprains, it is not useful for other types of pain.

Contraindications:

FDA pregnancy category B. This medication is not expected to be harmful to an unborn baby. It is not known whether cyclobenzaprine passes into breast milk or if it could harm a nursing baby.

 

Interactions:

Do not take Flexeril without first talking to your doctor if you are taking other prescription or over-the-counter medicines; including vitamins, minerals, and herbal supplements.
Flexeril may also interact with any of the following medicines:

  • Isocarboxazid (Marplan), tranylcypromine (Parnate), phenelzine (Nardil), or selegiline (Eldepryl, Emsam) - MAO inhibitors
  • Flexeril may enhance the effects of alcohol, barbiturates, and other CNS depressants.
  • Tricyclic antidepressants may block the antihypertensive action of guanethidine and similarly acting compounds.
  • Tricyclic antidepressants may enhance the seizure risk in patients taking tramadol

 

Side effects:


Most common and less serious side effects have been reported in treatment with Flexeril. These include:

  • dry mouth, increased thirst;
  • blurred vision;
  • drowsiness, dizziness, tired feeling;
  • feeling nervous or irritable;
  • heartburn, loss of appetite, stomach pain, nausea, vomiting;
  • muscle weakness;
  • diarrhea, constipation, gas;
  • sore throat, cold symptoms.

Stop medication and seek immediate medical attention if you experience:

  • fast, pounding, or uneven heartbeats;
  • chest pain or heavy feeling, pain spreading to the arm or shoulder, nausea, sweating, general ill feeling;
  • sudden numbness or weakness, especially on one side of the body;
  • sudden headache, confusion, problems with vision, speech, or balance;
  • feeling light-headed, fainting;
  • confusion, weakness, lack of coordination;
  • nausea, stomach pain, low fever, loss of appetite, dark urine, clay-colored stools, jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes);
  • seizure (convulsions);
  • unusual thoughts or behavior, hallucinations (seeing things); or
  • easy bruising or bleeding, unusual weakness.

Side effects other than those listed here may also occur. Talk to your doctor about any side effect that seems unusual or bothersome.


Dosage

Take Flexeril exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Frequency and dosage varies with type of condition. Take each dose with a full glass of water.
Swallow the tablet whole. Do crush or chew.
This medication is usually taken three times each day for a period of 2 to 3 weeks. Do not use cyclobenzaprine for longer than 3 weeks unless your doctor has told you to.
Do not stop taking cyclobenzaprine suddenly if you have been taking it for longer than 1 week. Stopping suddenly may cause nausea, headache and general discomfort.

Missed dose

If you miss a dose, skip it and continue with your next scheduled intake. Do not take two doses a day.

 

Overdose
