Atacand is a prescription medication that is used to treat instances of high blood pressure or hypertension and heart failure. Candesartan prevents the narrowing of the blood vesselsm which in turn lowers blood pressure and improves blood flow.

Interactions:

if you are taking other prescription or over-the-counter medicines; including vitamins, minerals, and herbal supplements, DO NOT take Atacand before consulting with your physician. Inform your physician if you are taking any of the following medications:

•  any other blood pressure medications;
•  lithium (Eskalith, Lithobid);
•  an ACE inhibitor such as benazepril (Lotensin), captopril (Capoten), fosinopril (Monopril), enalapril (Vasotec), lisinopril (Prinivil, Zestril), moexipril (Univasc), perindopril (Aceon), quinapril (Accupril), ramipril (Altace), or trandolapril (Mavik); or
•  a diuretic (water pill), such as amiloride (Midamor), spironolactone (Aldactone), or triamterene (Dyrenium, Maxzide, Dyazide).

If you are using any of these medications, your physician may require either a dosage adjustment, special monitoring during treatment, or prohibit you taking candesartan altogether.

Contraindications:

Consult with your physician before taking Atacand to determine if you have a sensitivity to its formulation, which consists of:

(active) Candesartan, (inactive) calcium carboxymethylcellulose, hydroxypropyl cellulose, lactose monohydrate, magnesium stearate, corn starch, polyethylene glycol 8000, ferric oxide (yellow), ferric oxide (reddish brown).

If you have any of the following conditions, consult with a physician before taking Atacand:

• kidney disease;
• liver disease;
• low or high levels of potassium in your blood; or
• if you are unable to urinate
• planning to become pregnant or are breast-feeding

Atacand is classified as FDA pregnancy category D, meaning this medication may cause harm to an unborn baby.

Side effects:

Inform your physician and stop taking this medication if you experience any of the following serious side effects:

•  feeling light-headed, fainting;
•  urinating more or less than usual, or not at all;
•  chest pain; or
•  dry mouth, increased thirst, drowsiness, restless feeling, confusion, nausea, vomiting, increased urination, muscle pain or weakness, fast heart rate, feeling light-headed, fainting, or seizure (convulsions).

Consult with your physician if you can continue using Atacand if you experience any of these less serious side effects:

•  back pain;
•  dizziness;
•  headache;
•  runny or stuffy nose, sore throat; or
•  dry cough

Other side effects not listed here are also likely to occur, Consult with your physician if any symptoms become particularly persistent or bothersome.

Dosage:

Take Atacand only as prescribed by your physician. Frequency and dosage may vary with the type of condition. It may take up to 4 weeks for this medication to control your blood pressure. Continue treatment with this medication even if you feel fine.

Missed dose

Take the missed dosage as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take the medicine at the next regularly scheduled time. Do not take extra medication to make up for the missed dosage.

Overdose:

Seek immediate medical attention if you think you have used too much of this medication.

Storage:

Store Atacand at 77 degrees F (25 degrees C) and away from heat, moisture, and light. Keep Atacand out of the reach of children and away from pets.
