Contraindications:

Do not take Arthrotec tablets without informing your doctor of your sensitivity to its formulation: (active) diclofenac sodium, misoprostol, (inactive) colloidal silicon dioxide, crospovidone, hydrogenated castor oil, hypromellose, lactose, magnesium stearate, methacrylic acid copolymer, microcrystalline cellulose, povidone (polyvidone) K-30, sodium hydroxide, starch (corn), talc, triethyl citrate.

Do not take Arthrotec without first talking to your doctor if you have any of the following conditions:

    *  pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding    
    *  history of kidney or liver problems,
    *  asthma; bone marrow depression; canker sores; or a hole, bleeding, or destruction of tissue in the stomach or intestines; or you are dehydrated    
    *  history of heart attack, stroke, or blood clot;
    *  heart disease, congestive heart failure, high blood pressure;
    *  a history of stomach ulcers or bleeding;
    *  polyps in your nose;
    *  porphyria;
    *  a bleeding or blood clotting disorder
    *  take any prescription or nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement
    *  have allergies to medicines, foods, or other substances
    *  if you smoke;
    *  if you drink alcohol

If you have any of these conditions, you may not be able to use Arthrotec, or you may need a dosage adjustment or special tests during treatment.

Arthrotec is in the FDA pregnancy category X. Misoprostol can cause birth defects, miscarriage, premature labor, or rupture of the uterus if the medication is taken during pregnancy. Diclofenac can cause birth defects if it is taken during the last 3 months of pregnancy. Do not use diclofenac and misoprostol if you are pregnant.      

Side effects:

Most common and less serious side effects have been reported in treatment with Arthrotec:

Diarrhea; dizziness; drowsiness; gas; headache; indigestion; nausea; stomach pain; swelling; upset stomach; vomiting.

Seek medical attention right away if any of these SEVERE side effects occur:

Severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); black, tarry stools; bleeding and ulcers in the stomach and intestines; dark urine; fever; heart failure; increase in asthma attacks; increased liver injury; loss of appetite; severe diarrhea; sore throat; trouble breathing; unusual bleeding or bruising; vaginal bleeding after menopause; vision or hearing problems; vomit that looks like coffee grounds; weight loss; yellowing of the skin or eyes.

Side effects other than those listed here may also occur. Talk to your doctor about any side effect that seems unusual or bothersome.

Dosage

Take Arthrotec exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Frequency and dosage varies with type of condition.
