Advair Diskus (fluticasone propionate and salmeterol xinafoate) is a prescription drug that contains two active ingredients: fluticasone and salmeterol. Fluticasone is a drug that prevents the release of substances in the body that cause swelling and irritation of the air passages. Salmeterol relaxes the airways and opens air passages in the lungs. The combination of both allow for easier breathing.

Advair Diskus is used for the long-term maintenance treatment of asthma. It is used for the prevention of asthma attacks for patients who are not adequately controlled on other asthma-controller medications, or whose disease severity clearly warrants treatment with two maintenance therapies.

It is NOT indicated for the relief of acute asthma symptoms, or by patients whose asthma can be successfully managed by inhaled corticosteroids and occasional use of inhaled, short-acting beta agonists.

Advair Diskus is also indicated for treatment of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) associated with chronic bronchitis. It is NOT indicated for the relief of acute bronchospasm.

Contraindications:

Interactions:

• Amiodarone.
• Diuretic or "water pill."
• Ritonavir, indinavir, nelfinavir.
• MAO inhibitors such as isocarboxazid, tranylcypromine, phenelzine, or selegiline.
• Amitriptyline, nortriptyline, desipramine, or imipramine; fluoxetine or fluvoxamine.
• Ketoconazole, itraconazole, clarithromycin, erythromycin.

Do not use a second form of salmeterol, or a similar inhaled bronchodilator unless told by your doctor.

Side effects:

Long-acting beta antagonists, such as the salmeterol component in ADVAIR DISKUS, may increase the risk of asthma-related death. Take the necessary precautions prior to taking LABA medicines.

Although treatment is generally well tolerated, ADVAIR side effect may still be experienced by some patients. These include:

• Increased blood pressure.

• Headache.
• Tremor.

Storage:

Store Advair Diskus between 20° to 25°C (68° to 77°F) and away from direct heat or sunlight.

Advair DISKUS inhalation device is non-reusable and should be discarded one month after removal from the foil pouch, or after all blisters have been used, whichever comes first.
