Nifedipine is a prescription medication used to lower instances of hypertension (high blood pressure) and to treat angina (chest pain). Calcium channel blockers work to widen the arteries of the heart and other arteries primarily to reduce angina chest pain and reduce elevated blood pressure, and stabilize the heart rhythm in conditions in which the heart is beating too fast, or when the heart is beating in an irregular rhythm.

Interactions:

  • Quinidine, theophylline, or vinca alkaloids (eg, vincristine) because their effectiveness may be decreased by Nifedipine

If you are taking any of the medications mentioned above, consult with your physician BEFORE taking Nifedipine. Your physician may require either a dosage adjustment, special monitoring during treatment, or prohibit you from taking Nifedipine altogether.

Do not consume grapefruit or grapefruit juice during treatment with nifedipine. Nifedipine can interact with grapefruit and grapefruit juice, and the interaction may have dangerous effects.

Drugs other than those listed here may also have an interaction with nifedipine or may affect your condition.


Contraindications:

Consult with your physician before taking Nifedipine to determine if you have a sensitivity to its formulation, which consists of:

Side effects:

Constipation; dizziness; flushing; giddiness; headache; heat sensation; heartburn; lightheadedness; nausea; weakness.

Seek immediate medical attention if any of these SEVERE side effects occur while taking Nifedipine:

Severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); irregular pulse; shortness of breath; swelling of the feet or hands; tender, bleeding, or swollen gums.

Dosage
